The GPS Made Me Do It Officer!

Blame the GPS for Your Traffic Ticket

We've all had that feeling before. The feeling you get when you see bright flashing red and blue lights in your rearview mirror. It's not a pleasant feeling, to say the least.

We mutter a few expletives, slowly pull over to the side of the road, compose ourselves as the police officer walks towards your window and wait for those dreaded words, "Do you know why I pulled you over?" Hearing that line is almost as bad a seeing the flashing lights, because, let's be honest, most of us know the reason why we were pulled over. Yet, when we're posed with this profound question, we often play dumb and say something to the degree of, "I don't know officer... Did I do something wrong?"

We then go on and give our excuses and reasoning for doing what we did, but they never seem to work. The officer asks us to sign the ticket, says to us "Have a nice day," walks back to his squad car and we carefully drive off while blurting out more expletives.

Interestingly, Insurance.com surveyed 500 drivers, asked them which excuse they are most likely to use in order to weasel their way out of a traffic ticket. For the most part, their research yielded expected results, however, one excuse surprisingly made the top 10 list. According to the survey, a significant number of drivers blamed their bad decisions on their GPS navigation systems.

This shows that GPS navigation and tracking technology has become more common and prevalent among drivers over recent years. GPS tracking and navigation systems are more affordable than they were even 5 years ago. Also, many drivers now rely on their smartphones and Google Maps to help them navigate to their destinations. GPS technology has definitely come a long way, where smartphones can now provide turn by turn voice navigation functionality, as well as provide the real-time GPS tracking location of the device.

The GPS excuse was #10 on the list, but I'm sure that we can expect this specific excuse to move up as GPS technology continues to advance.

Here are the results of Insurance.com's survey:

  1. I couldn't see the sign telling me not to do it: 20.5%.
  2. I'm lost and unfamiliar with the roads: 15.6%.
  3. I didn't know it was broken: 12.4%.
  4. Everyone else was doing it: 6.4%.
  5. I'm having an emergency situation in my car. (For instance, spilled a hot drink on your lap.): 5.4%.
  6. I missed my turn/exit: 4.8%.
  7. I had to go to the bathroom: 4.6%.
  8. I didn't do anything dangerous: 4.2%.
  9. I was on my way to an emergency. (For example, to help someone who is ill or injured.): 4%.
  10. My GPS said it was the right thing to do: 2.2%.
  11. I'm just helping out; I wasn't even supposed to be driving. (For example, your friend is intoxicated.): 2%.
